Day 11 - Portland

Another beautiful drive through redwood forests and along the coast. It’s actually quite strange, we’ve been doing like 8 hour drives most days…like the ol’ AKL-WELLY slog every single day…but, it is so much easier here. Due partly to the fact that its new scenery and also that its pretty much just highway the whole way, you don’t need to keep slowing down to go through small towns. It’s actually really nice to drive across the states.

Portland was one of the shows we were looking forward to most on the entire tour, so it only stands to reason that it would be a bummer. Portland is one of our favourite cities in the states, beautiful brick buildings, it seems like the entire city is full of choice people, Rocco’s Pizza is awesome, The video game place (read my first post) rules, the venues – Holocene, Backspace, Doug Fir Lounge are among the best in the country and the whole town is simply cool. Most of the people I know in the US are in Portland, and they were all out of town tonight.

We meet up with Kaz (PWRFL Power) tonight who we are doing a run of three shows with. We end up being first band up of four tonight, so were kinda bummed. Played to maybe 2 dozen people in bright lighting with everyone sitting down, on a bit of a downer after a run of sweet shows and we had to leave straight after playing to get through to Olympia that night, so we packed up the van quickly to make a quick exit.

It was one of those shows where you just think it went real lame, but as we left the venue the band get accosted by several stoked peeps, and one guy even runs down our van as we are pulling out to leave and buys a record through the car window. Strange how that can happen, ended up not being too bummed about the show.
