Wainuiomata Scout Camp
Most people hadn’t even heard of this camp. I mean, the Low Hum tours that have menaced our land from top to bottom have been one of the best things to happen to poor indy rock bands who can’t organise a practice in their dad’s garage - but Camp A Low Hum was so completely on the DL, I think only Blink really knew what was going on. There was perfect weather, a few drops of rain here and there but otherwise so warm and sunny that all the bands formerly from N.Z and now residing in Melbourne really didn’t have anything to get their whinge on about. There was a super line up, with anyone from Cortina, The Sneaks, Actor/Model, The Inkling, The Bonnie Scarlets and The Whipping Cats putting on top performances, and there was some rare game too with French cats Ladybug turning up and even a young Finn son putting on a tidy solo show. Not many people knew how to put up their tents properly and there really should have been a competition running there - but I suppose there wasn’t time when you had to look out for best tight pants, camel toe and muffin top. The moon came out full and kids who were in their mid twenties wandered around like bright lost souls with garish clothes and the optimistic abandon of 17 year olds. And there was plenty of camp fire antics too… some Elton John was attempted around a large hearth well into the night. Thanks Blink! I can still taste the Foxton Fizz. Bring on next Camp A Low Hum 2008!
